The band was formed by bassist Lance "Kuk" Collier and samples operator Nathan Church who were in a band together that opened for SlipknotSlipknot (sometimes typeset as SlipKnoT to fit their logo) are a Grammy award winning Heavy Metal band from Des Moines, Iowa. The nine-piece formed in 1995 and are currently signed to Roadrunner Records. Their albums and home videos have achieved platinum sales status. The band's Grammy award nominations include Best ...Slipknot in mid-1999. This put them in touch with Slipknot's Shawn "Clown" CrahanShawn "Clown" Crahan, (born Michael Shawn Crahan on September 24, 1969), is a percussionist in the metal band Slipknot. He has a set of deeply tuned toms (drums) on which he provides backup (along with Chris Fehn) to the drumming of Joey Jordison. According to Slipknot, he was the first band member to wear a mask (he had an old clown mask). Shawn is by far, the most accident prone of Slipknot's members, suffering at least twelve serious injuries.Shawn "Clown" Crahan, who introuced the two to future downthesun members in drummer Dan Spain and co-vocalist Satone, who was once a former Slipknot "Clown Tech". With the further addition of a second co-vocalist in Aaron Peltz and guitarist Bruce Swink, the group was formed, referring to themselves as "The Six".

They were signed to Roadrunner RecordsRoadrunner Records (Roadrunner Music Group B.V.) is a record label that concentrates on Rock and Metal bands.Roadrunner Records and released their self-titled debut album in 2002. Roadrunner claims that the band then lost members and parted ways with the label.
